Markus dropes a line „what about Qimaya?“

Since recently a new name is going around and gaining ground within the web community: Qimaya! Everybody is looking to find some major development for an industry which is currently suffering on too many copies of already existing web sites. Tim O-Reilly mentioned on the Web 2.0 Expo that the industry doesn’t need another search engine or another social network, that we don’t need copies of already existing business models BUT new and innovative models for true innovation. Also he is expecting the developers to build sustainible solutions looking at the currently existing and serious problems for everybody on this planet. Tim stated that independant whether it is global warming, the lack of meaning of the sciences or the spread between rich and poor; the Web2.0 application development is taking too less care of it.

btw. this is not Markus, the Geeks will probably wet their pants, this is of course Tim O´Reilly.
Qimaya is going to become one of the main contributors to change that! But what is Qimaya? How is Qimaya contributing? What ist he benefit for the users by using Qimaya?
A number of questions but let me also provide the answers to those.

First of all, Qimaya is NOT just another search engine, but a not yet known value add generating platform to all e-business applications and processes. Just looking at Qimaya as an application I would state that Qimaya is a „find engine“ but finally we’re talking about about a platform which enables users to bring their requests in connection with whatever kind of content. You know the BIG myth of the WEB? You don’t? It’s the ability to create the true SEMANTIC WEB! Who made it happen so far? Nobody! Who will make it happen? Qimaya! Qimaya is doing many things very different compared to what all the today known search engines are doing. Of course, technology behind is quite complicated and difficult to explain but I’ll try to keep it as illustrative as possible (i.e. because I’m not able to do it technoligically myself). However, what Qimaya basically does is to work like the human brain! Oppositely to what exisiting algorithims are doing, Qimaya is NOT comparing just the searched word or phrase against the content of the web page. Qimaya is adapting the ability of the human brain to recognize and categorize the complete content of a web page. In other words, Qimaya does have the power to identify a relevant relation between the searched word/phrase and the content of a web page EVEN THOUGH that the word/phrase hasn’t been mentioned explicitely within the content.
Wow, that’s kind of an innovation, isn’t it? But that’s not all and enough. Qimaya is continiously building, depending on the growing and changing content, AUTOMATICALLY a neural network which allows Qimaya to provide all information relevant to the appropriate search request. If you’re not sure about it, read it agian: continiously, automatically, information. The human brain associates permanently things to its thoughts (requests) and every individuals brain associates differently. So does Qimaya! Relevancy is individually triggered. Something which is very relevant to me, relative to one topic (search request), might be absolutely irrelvant to you. That’s something Qimaya learns and recognizes automatically. Which is another BIG difference to all other search engines we do know today. Qimaya is working highly automatic in different aspects: Automatically growing, automatically changing (content can become irrelevant over a certain period of time), automatically associating!

Green IT! Ever heard about about? I’m in the industry for quite a while and always some major topic is touching both individuals and organizations. Very often those topics are different because of the different levels of interest. I perceive Green IT as one of these topics which perfectly builds THE lowest common denominator for both. Global warming, the reasonable use of the decreasing availibilty of resources and the finally required responsibility we all have to take for the planet we’re living on is what has to be taken into account when we talk about the value of IT and the information. I mentioned earlier that Qimaya is focussing on information. But what is information? Is it all, what is available in the web today? No! I would bring it down to a simple formula:

Information = (available data in the web) – (rubbish data in the web)

Information is value! How do we define value? Easy: By the level of relevance an information has for us! How do reach relevance? Easy again: By the analysis of linking but not by linking pages (i.e. web pages). True linking means linking of directly the true content! Qimaya is using this formula absolutely strict because each request is being linked with the true content! The effects out of this capability is twofold. First the level of quality of information is increasing tremendously (Knowledge Management) and secondly the amount of required space for storage and other resources is decreasing equally tremendous. That leads, absolutely no doubt about that, to a higher satisfaction for the users and more important to a more responsible use of the resources we do have.

I trust this is some heavy stuff to digest already but I promise you that’s just the beginning of the story. I finish for now and will let you some room for thinking about it. I tell you, it’s worth about thinking it because some changes are going to take place soon. I look forward sharing and enjoying those together with you.

  2. thank you very much for this explication – being able to identify relevant information is indeed necessary ! our approach is structuring the information probably both is needed – because often people don`t what is the right question for the answers they really need.
    How can you decide within seconds if product or company is relevant for your business?
